Stadium | Tokyo, Japan
The New National Stadium Japan sits in the center of Tokyo where various urban situations touch the site. As it is located in the heart of Tokyo, the new stadium should represent the traditionalism of Japan, and originality of the Olympic. Those two different concepts are naturally connected and merged to each other having new kinds of structure that are supporting each other. The new stadium design stems from the original Coliseum where the olympic is used to be held. The design approach of the stadium tries to mediate between arch which is referred from the Coliseum, and eaves which is referred from traditional Japanese roof. Those which are supporting the arch and eaves are arch structure and eaves structure which are connected to each other and merged naturally. The arch structure supports vertical loads, and eaves structure supports horizontal loads. The top roof where it covers the overall stadium seating area is supported by traditional Japanese eaves structure and transfers horizontally to the arch structure. The arch structure takes the load and transfers the load to the ground vertically while it is tightly connected to the flat slabs on each floor plate where it functions as a truss structure system. Those two different structures are naturally connected and form clear structural systems giving open space that are connected to outside of urban context and nature as much.
