Music Theater | Tokyo, Japan
The New Tokyo Music Centre sits on the site which touches both the street of Harajuku, the most fashionable street in Tokyo, on the other side, Togo Shrine, very traditional street. Inspired by the roofscape of both traditional and contemporary streets of Tokyo, the New Music Center tries to mediate those two conflicting streets. By placing traditional and contemporary eaves neatly on the site, the theater integrates extreme differences of the surroundings. Those two different eaves are naturally connected and form theater space, as well as public areas. Different configuration of the eaves promotes different activities related to each street. Moreover, both sides of eaves naturally provide various kinds of spaces by adjusting depth of the eaves. Under the eaves, people could not only walk around enjoying sightseeing toward Harajuku Street and Togo Shrine Street, but also enjoy performances inside of the theater which is open from the outside.
